Discussing in detail about the Flexible Coupling & Vulkan coupling ez spares

The idea is simple – mechanical couplings are typically used in the connection of rotating shafts for the greater purpose of transferring the rotary motion and torque. As it is with any other mechanical devices, a coupling must match its’ intended purpose and application parameters and the same stands true for the flexible couplings as well. There are thus a number of factors such as performance, environmental, use and service factors that comes into play for the coupling to work properly.

When the flexible Vulkan coupling ez spares is selected with these design parameters in mind, and when installed and operating correctly, the coupling should have no failure issues over its’ lifetime. However, when the criteria are not met the coupling can prematurely fail and this may result in inconvenience, dire financial loss or personal injury.

The good news is the choice of Flexible Coupling available to today’s engineers can be daunting; however, you can follow our guidelines to arrive the optimum coupling. Consider the following aspect –

Does the flexible coupling provide adequate misalignment protection?

·        Can it transmit the required torque?
·        Do you need the axial motion or axial stiffness?
·        Can it sustain the required speed of rotation?
·        Will it fit within the available space envelope?
·        Does it provide the electrical isolation between the shafts?
·        Will it have the required life expectancy?

The Standard Range of Flexible Coupling however comprises

·        Shaft to shaft
·        Shaft to shaft with increasing shaft engagement
·        Flywheel to shaft
·        Flywheel to shaft with increased shaft engagement

The significance of proper flexible coupling installation -

Of course you can prepare the most delicious meal possible but fail to serve it properly will send your guests home disgruntled. The same holds true for the Vulkan coupling ez spares. The apt design and the attention when selecting a shaft coupling is essentially meaningless if the coupling is not installed properly or if the actual application parameters are outside of original design criteria.

So here is the guideline of proper installation of the flexible couplings –

·        Prepare the coupling and shafts prior to installation by cleaning the mating parts. Also oil the shafts lightly.
·        Follow all instructions for fasteners
·        Don’t install the coupling too far left or right of the center line
·        Don’t install shafts too deep or too shallow in the hubs
·        Don’t introduce stress on the coupling by compressing or stretching it upon installation
·        Flexible Couplings must always be installed in their free-state

Application of the flexible couplings

·        Generator sets
·        Pump set
·        Compressors
·        Wind turbines
·        Metal manufacture
·        Bulk handling
·        Pulp and paper industry
·        General purpose heavy duty industrial applications

A brief discussion about Vulkan coupling ez spares, Flexible Coupling

Finally when the time comes for specifying replacements for mechanical power transmission couplings, it's common to take the easy path and find out something similar to the coupling that failed.

Or may be to apply a few over sizing fudge factors just to be conservative! Needless to say, it invites a repeat failure or often rather costly system damage. And the best solution is to add the flexible coupling without much delay.

Of course taking time to determine the right type of coupling is important  even if it only verifies the previous design. However it should lead you to something totally different that will work better and last longer. There is hardly any denying that it will reward you by extending the life of bearings, preventing fretted spline shafts, bushings and seals, minimizing noise and vibration, and cutting long-term maintenance costs.
In most of the cases industrial power transmission calls for flexible couplings rather than rigid couplings! It helps in forgiving minor shaft misalignment.
However determining the right type of flexible coupling and Vulkan coupling ez spares starts with profiling the application as follows :
·         type of prime mover
·         driven-system inertia values in relation to prime-mover inertia
·         vibration, both linear and torsional
·         shaft-to-shaft misalignment
·         axial (in/out) shaft movement
·         ambient conditions
The next step is however to review available types of flexible couplings to make sure which type best suits your application profile.
Typically, flexible couplings divide into two primary groups... metallic and elastomeric. While metallic types are all-metal designs the elastomeric types gain flexibility from using resilient, non-moving, rubber or plastic elements to transmit torque between usually metallic driving/driven hubs.

Metallic types are best suited to applications that require
torsional stiffness
operation in relatively high ambient temperatures
electric motor drive
relatively constant, low-inertia loads

Elastomeric types are best suited to applications that require
torsional softness
greater radial softness
lighter weight/lower cost, in terms of torque
